The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has convened the inaugural meeting of its newly inaugurated Board, marking a significant milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s drive toward quality, inclusive, and accessible basic education for all children.
The Board is chaired by Senator Al-Makura, with Dr. Aisha Garuba serving as Secretary. Other members of the Board are eminent Nigerians drawn from diverse backgrounds in education and public service, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to support UBEC’s mandate and enhance institutional governance.
During the meeting, the Board reaffirmed its collective commitment to safeguarding the integrity of UBEC’s operations and decision-making processes, expanding access to quality basic education across the country, and ensuring the efficient and transparent use of public resources in line with national priorities.
Members also underscored the importance of sustained collaboration with key stakeholders to achieve measurable and impactful outcomes in the basic education sub-sector.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Senator Al-Makura, emphasized the Board’s resolve to uphold the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and good governance in the discharge of its responsibilities.
He noted that a strong governance framework is essential for UBEC to effectively support states and local governments in improving learning outcomes nationwide.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the Board, Dr. Aisha Garuba, highlighted the critical role of inclusivity and innovation in advancing Nigeria’s educational goals.
She stressed the need for policies and programmes that respond to emerging challenges, promote equity, and ensure that no child is left behind in the pursuit of basic education.
