Two-Year Sentence for Man Who Attacked Women on Morning Trains

A 31-year-old Coventry man with Nigerian heritage has been sentenced to prison after admitting to sexually assaulting two women on early morning commuter trains travelling to London.

Esosa Eguakin, of Courtelle Road, Coventry, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault. He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on February 10, 2026, at Guildford Crown Court.

The court heard that the first incident took place on August 21, 2025, at about 7:15 am, on a train travelling from Fratton, Portsmouth, to London Waterloo. Eguakin deliberately sat behind a woman in her 30s and sexually assaulted her during the journey.

The second offence occurred on October 6, 2025, shortly after 6:00 am, on a train from Eastleigh to London Waterloo. On that occasion, he sexually assaulted another woman. When she challenged him about his behaviour, he claimed he had dropped his mobile phone and was trying to retrieve it. He refused to move away from her.

An off-duty police officer who was on the train intervened and escorted Eguakin off the service at Woking station. The officer arrested him and detained him at the station until uniformed officers arrived and took him into custody.

Following an investigation by the British Transport Police, Eguakin was charged with two counts of sexual assault. He later admitted both offences in court.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). The order prohibits him from sitting or standing next to, or directly opposite, any lone woman on public transport.

Detective Constable David Stewart, speaking after the sentencing, said:

“Eguakin’s behaviour was predatory and deeply distressing for both victims. No one should feel unsafe or be subjected to such violations as they travel.”

He added:

“I want to thank the women involved for their courage in supporting our investigation, as well as the off-duty officer whose swift actions prevented further harm. This sentence, along with the SHPO, sends a clear message that we will pursue offenders and ensure they are held to account.”

British Transport Police stated that reports of sexual offences on the rail network are taken seriously and encouraged passengers to report incidents.

The court was told that both assaults took place during busy weekday morning services into London.

Eguakin will serve time in custody and remain subject to restrictions even after his release.
