Gunmen, on Monday, launched an attack on a police station at Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State, killing two officers and destroying many properties.
Some of the properties destroyed by the hoodlums were part of the police station and motorcycles.
TNC correspondent gathered that the gunmen, who invaded the police station in the early hours of yesterday, used explosive devices and shot sporadically before the fire caught part of the Station.
The attack follows a series of sustained attacks on police formations in the state, the latest being an attack on the Ogbaru Police Station.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, however, said the police commissioner, Mr Nnaghe Obono Itam, has visited the scene, on a spot assessment to reinforce and reassess security deployment.
According to Ikenga, the Joint Security Forces comprising of the Police, the Nigerian Army, the Navy, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, and other Security Agencies have recovered five unexploded improvised explosives and are currently on the trail of the arsonist and armed successionist.
“The suspected Armed Proscribed Group invaded the Police Facility with improvised explosives, shooting sporadically and fire caught part of the Station.
“Unfortunately, two of the Police Operatives on duty during the gun battle in a bid to resist the assailants from causing more havoc paid the supreme price.
“Their bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue,” he stated.
Ikenga further revealed that an operation is ongoing, to clear an identified criminal camp in the area.
