In a significant counter-operation, Nigerian Army troops have recovered 529 livestock from suspected terrorists following a fierce engagement in Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Acting on credible intelligence, troops of the Forward Operation Base (FOB) Malumfashi, under 17 Brigade, mobilized to intercept the criminals around Kasuwan Sabo on Friday, February 7, 2026.

Preliminary reports indicate the infiltrating terrorists were allegedly led by Idi Abasu Aiki, believed to be the younger brother of notorious bandit leader Ado Aliero.
Upon sighting the advancing troops, the bandits opened fire but were overwhelmed by the soldiers’ superior firepower, forcing a retreat into nearby bushes.

The troops initiated a hot pursuit, catching up with the fleeing suspects between Burdugau and Unguwan Matau villages in neighbouring Malumfashi LGA. The confrontation compelled the bandits to abandon the stolen animals.
After an extensive sweep of the area, the military successfully recovered 290 cows, 238 sheep, one donkey, and one motorcycle. Sadly, 14 cows reportedly used as shields by the terrorists were killed in the crossfire. No casualties were recorded among the troops.
The General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Paul Koughna, commended the troops’ gallantry and professionalism. He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against criminal elements in the North-West.
The recovered livestock have been handed over to the Kafur Local Government Chairman, Honourable Suraju Nature, and the Divisional Police Officer, SP Aminu Salihu, for verification and return to their rightful owners.
