1. Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka visited President Bola Tinubu in Lagos State, to discuss a seven-point agenda for moving Nigeria forward. Soyinka, who had advised Tinubu not to run for president in the past, shared that his current visit was to check on Tinubu and wish him a merry Christmas. Despite being old friends, Soyinka refrained from rating Tinubu’s performance in office, stating that his assessment tradition involves waiting for one year before offering opinions on the administration. Soyinka emphasized that this approach has been consistent with Tinubu’s predecessors.

2. There has been a surge in consumer demand for loans in Nigeria, reaching the highest level in almost four years in August. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) reported a 16.9% increase to N2.99 trillion, attributing it to inflationary pressures and economic challenges. Personal loans constituted 75.4%, while retail loans made up 24.6%. Experts suggest that tough economic conditions, job market difficulties, and rising inflation lead to increased reliance on credit for essential consumption. Inflation has doubled in the last eight years, worsened by reforms such as petrol subsidy removal and naira devaluation.

3. Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has defended the peace deal initiated by President Bola Tinubu between him and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Fubara, in a broadcast, expressed commitment to implementing the peace agreement, emphasizing it as essential for lasting peace in the state. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee warned Fubara against implementing the agreement without the party’s input. The PDP contends that the peace pact, particularly regarding lawmakers’ defection, involves constitutional issues, and Fubara’s plan may lead to trouble for him.

4. The Ondo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps) arrested 12 suspected kidnappers and armed robbers. The commander, Adetunji Adeleye, emphasized their commitment to curbing crime in all local councils. Seven of the suspects were arrested in Owo, and four of them were hired for criminal activities by the remaining three. Adeleye warned criminals to leave, stating their zero-tolerance approach to criminality in Ondo State.

5. In spite of the Christmas season, 100 people were killed in Israeli air raids overnight in central Gaza. Strikes in Maghazi and Bureij refugee camps resulted in casualties, with the death toll expected to rise. Most victims were women and children, and the attacks have severely damaged neighborhoods and infrastructure. The Maghazi camp, previously advised for evacuation by the Israeli military, has been “completely flattened.” The ongoing bombardment has strained Gaza’s medical care system, nearing collapse. Hamas labeled the air attack a “horrific massacre” and a “new war crime.” Israel’s military spokesperson’s office is investigating the reports. Despite a recent UN Security Council resolution for increased aid to Gaza, air raids have intensified.

6. As the family dispute involving veteran Nollywood actor Emeka Ike, his ex-wife Suzanne Emma, and their son Michael continue. Emeka Ike’s brother, Victor, disputed the allegations made by Suzanne and Michael, demanding that Michael apologize to his father. Victor claimed Suzanne slapped Emeka, made unauthorized bank transactions, and ruined business ventures. Michael, in the interview, had accused his father of abusive language and harsh treatment. According to Emeka Ike, the assault allegations from his ex-wife has led to the closure of his school and loss of assets. The online community has expressed various opinions on the matter.

7. A viral video of Mr. Macaroni, refusing to greet the Governor of Lagos state, is making rounds on social media. The action prompted the governor to jokily question him for not greeting him. The actor had in the past been critical of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s handling of the October 20, 2020 EndSARS protest. Eventually, Macaroni had to courtesy to the governor.
