Trending Today: Media Highlights!

—

Season’s greetings! In today’s trending news stories;

1. A report from the Central Bank’s special investigator links former Governor Godwin Emefiele to the mysterious acquisition of Union Bank and Keystone Bank. The investigator found that entities claiming to be Union Bank’s shareholders in the UAE lacked a physical presence in Dubai, violating banking regulations. The report alleges that Emefiele used proxies to set up Titan Trust Bank and acquire Union Bank with ill-gotten wealth. Additionally, it claims that Emefiele, with CBN’s connivance, acquired Keystone Bank without proper payment evidence, involving a complex financial transaction. The investigator recommends the nationalization of Union and Keystone Banks, along with Titan Trust Bank, due to these findings.
2. Akinwumi Adesina, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has been awarded the 2023 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership. The prize, presented by the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, recognizes Adesina’s outstanding leadership qualities and contributions. Emeka Anyaoku, chairman of the selection committee, commended Adesina for his transformative reforms in Nigeria’s agricultural sector and his impactful initiatives as the President of AfDB, such as the “High 5s” initiative. The award ceremony is scheduled for March 6, 2024, on Chief Awolowo’s birth anniversary.

3. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has lifted restrictions on virtual asset service providers (VASPs), allowing them to operate accounts with banks and financial organizations. However, the CBN maintains that banks are still not permitted to hold, trade, or transact in virtual currencies on their accounts. This development is seen as a positive signal for the cryptocurrency industry in Nigeria, following previous restrictions imposed in February 2021. While some experts view this as a shift in the CBN’s stance, others note that certain uncertainties remain in the newly issued guidelines.

4. Simone Biles has been named the AP Female Athlete of the Year for 2023, marking her third time receiving the honor. This recognition comes after her remarkable comeback season, where she won her sixth world all-around title and multiple golds at the World Championships. Biles, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, took a hiatus due to mental health struggles after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but made a triumphant return to the sport in 2023. The 26-year-old gymnast, with 30 world medals, is gearing up for the Olympic Summer Games in Paris 2024.

5. The 2023 NXT Honors presented by Top Charts Africa has announced its winners for the year. Notable recipients include Don Jazzy, Ayra Starr, and Khosi Twala, who were recognized for their achievements in the African entertainment and business industries. The awards span various categories such as film, music, fashion, broadcasting, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy, highlighting individuals and entities that have demonstrated talent, creativity, and innovation on the continent.

6. Fola Francis, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s transgender community and a well-known activist and fashion designer has met an untimely death. Fola tragically drowned at Ilashe beach. As the first transgender individual to walk the catwalk at Lagos Fashion Week in 2022, Fola was celebrated for breaking barriers. Freelance journalist Vincent Desmond confirmed the incident on December 22, expressing deep sadness and announcing plans for a memorial service while requesting privacy for Fola’s grieving family and friends.

7. Veteran media personality Frank Edoho expressed the belief that men can cheat while still being in love with their partners, attributing it to the nature of men. He suggested that women, on the other hand, cannot cheat while being in love. The discussion took place on the Bahd And Boujee Podcast, co-hosted by Moet Abebe and Tolanibaj. Edoho’s perspective led to a disagreement with Abebe, who argued that women can cheat without emotional attachment. Edoho also addressed rumors about being fired from ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ stating he left because the organizers decided to rest the competition. His views has sparked controversial responses on social media.

Air Force Destroys Boko Haram Logistics Hub, Neutralises Fighters in Precision Strike in Borno

The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI has intensified its offensive against terrorist groups in Nigeria's North-East, destroying a major terrorist enclave and logistics hub during a precision airstrike in Borno State. According to Intelligence sources the operation was carried out at about 2:40 p.m. on Friday, July 10, targeting Yaganari, a notorious terrorist stronghold within the Gezuwa general area. According to the sources, the location had recently become a regrouping point where insurgents were consolidating fighters and logistics for planned attacks. The strike followed credible intelligence indicating heightened terrorist activities in the area. Military intelligence reportedly conducted persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions to verify the information before authorising the engagement. A source said surveillance assets confirmed the presence of multiple terrorist structures, logistics facilities and visible movement of insurgents within the target area. Following confirmation, Air Component aircraft carried out a series of precision strikes, accurately engaging the designated targets in successive attack runs. The operation reportedly destroyed the identified terrorist structures, obliterated logistics hubs and neutralised several insurgents operating within the enclave. Military sources described the mission as a significant blow to terrorist operations in the North-East, noting that the destruction of the logistics infrastructure would further weaken the insurgents' ability to coordinate attacks and sustain their activities. The operation underscores the military's continued reliance on intelligence-driven precision airstrikes to dismantle terrorist command centres, safe havens and supply networks, while supporting ongoing ground operations by troops of Operation HADIN KAI. Security sources added that a battle damage assessment is ongoing to determine the full extent of the impact of the strike, while intensified aerial surveillance has been deployed over the area to prevent surviving terrorists from regrouping.
