The political transfer market known as the defection gale in Nigeria has taken a new twist in the oil-rich Akwa Ibom State as over 1000 supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) shifted base to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a seeming rejection of former Governor Godswill Akpabio.
PDP Chairman in the state, Paul Ekpo is busy boasting that his party has remained a religion for the peoples of Akwa Ibom, He said so while commending the defectors for realising their mistakes and coming back to the PDP.
The over 1000 APC players are from Oron Federal Constituency. The political development is coming despite the defection of Senator Akpabio to the ruling party on Wednesday, August 8.
Ekpo, the PDP chair is urging the people of the state to keep supporting the party and the state governor, Udom Emmanuel, adding, ”Akwa Ibom state, over the years, matched promises with action, as demonstrated in the developmental strides of the Udom Emmanuel administration. So, I call on Oron nation to deliver one hundred percent vote to Governor Udom and the PDP in the 2019 election.”
Akpabio, who dominated the affairs of the oil state for eight years as governor (2007-2015) and eight years previously as commissioner officially jumped the PDP ship for the APC apparently due to a disturbing graft problem. The former governor is alleged to have pocketed N108 billion from the oil revenue of the state while holding sway as the chief executive..
He defected to APC in a grand show at the Ikot-Ekpene township stadium . Some of those present at the defection ceremony were the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole; Senate Majority Leader, Ahmed Lawan; the ceremonial National Leader of the party, Bola Tinubu; and Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed
