A passenger of a bus has died in a fatal accident, after the vehicle he was in was hit by a speeding Mark trailer at Uzoakwa-Ihiala, along Ihiala-Owerri road.
The fatal crash involved three vehicles; a Nissan commercial bus with registration number: JJT-57XX, a DAF Trailer with no registration number, and a Mack Trailer with no registration number.
It was gathered that the cause of the crash which occurred at about noon on Thursday, was attributed to Wrongful Overtaking and Speed.
According to an eyewitness, the bus driver stopped in front of a bakery and was discharging passengers, when he was hit by one of the trailers.
The two trailers were said to be coming from behind with excessive speed, trying to overtake each other, and as a result of that, the Mark trailer hit the bus with an electric pole.
The bus then somersaulted and crashed, while the two trailers continued their movement without stopping.
Confirming the incident, the Public Education Officer, of the Anambra Sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Margaret Onabe, said 17 people, comprising 13 male adults and 4 female adults, were involved in the crash.
“The injured persons comprised 3 male adults and one female adult, while one male adult was killed.
“12 people were rescued unhurt.
“The injured victims were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala by FRSC rescue team from RS5.34 Ihialla Unit Command, while the dead victim was deposited at the same hospital mortuary,” Onabe revealed.
The Anambra FRSC spokesperson noted that the State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi has sympathized with the family of the dead victim and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.
She said; “The Sector Commander warns motorists to desist from wrongful overtaking and drive within safe speed limits they can control.
“He also advised commercial vehicles to park outside the road where it is safe to offload passengers.
“Speed thrills but kills, so let’s keep our roads safe from crashes by always adhering to road rules.”
