Tinubu’s Bold Stance: Choose Between Petrol at N1000/Litre or CNG at N200

President Bola Tinubu has presented Nigerian drivers with two options: switch to compressed natural gas (CNG) at N200 per standard cubic meter or continue paying N1,000 per liter for regular gasoline (Premium Motor Spirit). 

This pivotal statement was made during a meeting with Mr. Ramesh Kasangra, Director of the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO), and other executives, as reported by The Punch.

In a statement titled “President Tinubu Meets NIPCO Executives, Commends Investments in the CNG Sector,” Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed that the meeting took place at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday. 

Tinubu clarified that Nigerians now have a financial incentive to switch from petrol to CNG, with the added advantage that commercial drivers can make the transition “at no cost.”

Tinubu emphasized the benefits of CNG, especially in light of the growing financial burden associated with traditional petrol. “Nigerians can purchase petrol at N1,000 per litre or get equivalent energy per Standard Cubic Meter at N200,” the president stated, underscoring the stark price difference. 

He also highlighted government incentives to ease the transition for commercial drivers, positioning CNG as a more sustainable and affordable option for the future.

The president also commended NIPCO for contributing to Nigeria’s energy transition efforts, particularly its alignment with the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI). 

According to the statement, “President Tinubu acknowledged NIPCO’s role as a critical player in enhancing the adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel, noting that such investments align with his administration’s energy security and economic diversification strategy.”

Moreover, Tinubu praised NIPCO’s early efforts in promoting the “Switch to CNG” campaign, which significantly raised public awareness about CNG’s benefits. 

The company’s provision of affordable CNG conversion kits was highlighted as a key contribution toward helping Nigerians embrace cleaner, more cost-effective energy alternatives.
