Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, says President Bola Tinubu is actively pursuing diplomatic efforts to secure a permanent seat for Nigeria on the United Nations Security Council.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today monitored by The News Chronicle, Ibrahim argued that Africa’s exclusion from the permanent membership of the Security Council remains a historical injustice that must be addressed. He said President Tinubu has consistently pushed for stronger African representation in global decision-making.
According to the envoy, Nigeria is well-positioned to represent the continent, citing its leadership role in Africa, contributions to peacekeeping operations and growing diplomatic influence.
He noted that the current administration has intensified engagement with key international partners as part of broader foreign policy efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s global standing.
Ibrahim maintained that achieving permanent membership for Nigeria would not only enhance the country’s influence in international affairs but also give Africa a stronger voice on issues relating to global peace, security and development.
The ambassador stressed that reforming the UN Security Council has become increasingly necessary in light of changing global realities, insisting that Africa deserves equitable representation in the world’s highest security decision-making body.
He expressed optimism that sustained diplomatic engagement and collaboration with other member states would improve Nigeria’s chances of attaining the long-sought position.
