Tinubu Reforms Deepen Hardship as Debt and Living Costs Soar

—

Three years after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office, many Nigerians are still struggling with rising hardship despite repeated government claims that economic reforms are improving the country’s finances and attracting investors.

Although the effects on ordinary people remain severe, the government’s main policies, including the removal of gasoline subsidies and foreign currency reforms, have altered Nigeria’s economy.

Food prices, transportation costs, and inflation have continued to rise, putting pressure on small businesses and families.

The News Chronicle reports that government income and foreign reserves have increased under the Tinubu administration; yet, as living standards drop across the nation, public irritation has also grown.

New data reveal that Nigeria’s debt profile soared from N87.38 trillion in mid-2023 to more than N159 trillion by the end of 2025, while debt servicing expenses increased dramatically over the same period.

While tax receipts and the stock market saw significant increases, economic growth has remained favorable. Analysts, however, claim that millions of Nigerians struggling with reduced purchasing power have not benefited from those advances in terms of better welfare.

Critics contend that the changes lacked adequate social safety nets, therefore increasing the burden on already struggling, jobless, and inflation-ridden people.

With borrowing still on the rise and the economy under pressure, arguments about Tinubu’s policies are likely to take center stage in national debates heading into the next election cycle.
