The Presidency has dismissed as fake and divisive a viral report claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to amend the Constitution to rename Nigeria the United States of Nigeria and abolish Sharia Law in the North.
In a statement issued on Thursday and made available to The News Chronicle, the Presidency described the report as a fabrication designed to stir political tension and destabilise the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement signed by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the controversial story relied on anonymous sources and was concocted by desperate politicians seeking to inflame the polity.
“The viral story is entirely false and should be ignored by Nigerians,” the Presidency stated, warning that those behind the report are agents of destabilisation and merchants of disorder.
The Presidency also debunked claims that President Tinubu intends to transmit a constitutional amendment bill, allegedly codenamed Project True Federation, to the National Assembly before the 2027 elections.
It stressed that constitutional amendments are subject to strict legal procedures and cannot be carried out unilaterally by the President or the National Assembly.
“Constitutional amendment is a serious legislative process requiring a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly and the approval of at least 24 State Houses of Assembly,” the statement noted.
The Presidency maintained that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering what it described as “tangible dividends” to Nigerians, rather than engaging in divisive political distractions.
It further urged Nigerians to be cautious of misinformation and inflammatory reports as political activities intensify ahead of the January 2027 general elections.
