Tinubu Mourns Former Finance Minister Abubakar Alhaji, Pays Tribute to ‘Titan of Public Service’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of elder statesman, former Minister of Finance, and veteran diplomat, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, describing him as a towering figure whose decades of service left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s public administration and economic development.

Alhaji, who died at the age of 85, served the nation in several strategic capacities, including as Permanent Secretary, Minister of Finance, and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Reacting to the loss, President Tinubu described the late Sardauna of Sokoto as a “titan of public service,” a consummate bureaucrat, and a patriotic Nigerian whose intellectual brilliance, fiscal discipline, and diplomatic acumen shaped the country’s economic and political trajectory.

The President said the late statesman distinguished himself through decades of exemplary service, earning national respect for his commitment to good governance and public administration.

Tinubu extended his condolences to the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultanate Council, and the Sokoto royal family over the passing of the revered prince.

He also sympathised with the government and people of Sokoto State, as well as the late Alhaji’s associates, protégés, and admirers across the country.

The President prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
