Tinubu Introduces Groundbreaking Policy to Revamp Nigeria’s Healthcare

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed a transformative policy designed to overhaul the management of healthcare human resources in Nigeria.
This new initiative, known as the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration, seeks to tackle significant issues currently impacting the country’s healthcare system, setting the stage for a more resilient and efficient healthcare infrastructure.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, revealed the policy on August 12.
This groundbreaking policy aims not only to address the ongoing migration of healthcare professionals but also to strategically manage and reverse this trend.
It envisions a robust healthcare workforce that is well-supported and adequately rewarded, thereby ensuring that the needs of the Nigerian population are effectively met.
The policy introduces the Nigeria Human Health Resource Program, which will regularly assess and improve working conditions, particularly in rural and underserved regions, to better support and retain healthcare workers.
It also emphasized the integration of advanced health technologies, such as Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and telehealth services, to enhance the efficiency and equity of healthcare delivery.
Moreover, the policy prioritizes capacity building through continuous professional development and international training opportunities.
It also includes provisions for the return and reintegration of Nigerian healthcare professionals from abroad, offering streamlined registration and attractive incentives to encourage their reentry into the national health system.
Additionally, the policy promotes reciprocal agreements with other countries to ensure a balanced exchange of healthcare professionals, safeguarding national interests while honoring the rights of Nigerian workers.
It also includes measures to support work-life balance, such as routine health checks and mental health support, to foster a positive work environment and reduce burnout among healthcare professionals.
