Tinubu Flags Off 125km Akwanga–Jos Highway, Gives Update on Lagos-Calabar, Sokoto-Badagry Mega Roads

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday flagged off the 125-kilometer Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos section of the 700-kilometer Akwanga–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Superhighway, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure across the country.

Represented by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, at the ceremony, the President described the project as the fourth legacy highway initiative under his Renewed Hope Agenda.

Tinubu said the superhighway would strengthen national integration, improve road safety, boost trade and unlock economic opportunities across the North-Central and North-East regions.

He explained that the 700-kilometer highway, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), is being implemented in phases to ensure efficient, timely completion.

The President recalled that Section II of the project, linking Gombe and Biu, was flagged off on June 4, 2026, while the commencement of the 125-kilometer Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos stretch marks another major milestone in the project’s implementation.

According to him, the corridor comprises five sections: Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos (125km), Jos–Bauchi (135km), Bauchi–Gombe (162km), Gombe–Biu (125km) and Biu–Maiduguri (188km), all designed to improve connectivity, facilitate commerce and drive regional economic integration.

Tinubu also provided updates on other flagship road projects, expressing satisfaction with the pace of work nationwide.

He disclosed that Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in Lagos has been substantially completed, while Section II in Ogun State is 60 percent complete.

According to the President, Sections IIIA and IIIB in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States are 20 percent complete; Sections IVA and IVB in Akwa Ibom have attained 5 percent completion, while Section V has been awarded and construction is underway.

On the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, Tinubu said Section I in Sokoto State is 40 percent complete; Section II in Kebbi State has reached 60 percent; Section III in Ogun State stands at 18 percent; and mobilization is ongoing for Section IV in Oyo State.

He added that work is also progressing on the Trans-Sahara Trade Route linking Calabar, Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Abuja, with the Ebonyi section at 15 percent completion and mobilization already underway in Benue.

The President expressed confidence that the legacy road projects would transform transportation, create jobs, stimulate economic growth, attract investment and enhance national prosperity.

Tinubu also directed the Minister of Works to work with the Surveyor-General of the Federation and governors of affected states to secure adequate setbacks along the project corridors for future expansion, supporting infrastructure, tolling facilities and long-term maintenance.

He urged contractors handling the projects to prioritize the engagement of Nigerian youths, promote technology transfer and contribute to the country’s long-term manpower development.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Works David Umahi praised Tinubu’s commitment to what he described as an unprecedented nationwide infrastructure renewal program.

Umahi said the administration had remained focused on constructing and rehabilitating strategic highways despite prevailing economic challenges, noting that road projects are currently ongoing across all 36 states.

He said the Renewed Hope infrastructure agenda is laying the foundation for a more connected, competitive and economically prosperous Nigeria, while reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering durable road infrastructure that will serve future generations.
