Tinubu Defends NYSC Overhaul, Says Youth Must Be Future-Ready

—

President Bola Tinubu has explained the rationale behind the Federal Government’s sweeping reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), saying the overhaul is designed to equip young Nigerians with practical skills and prepare them for nation-building.

The President said the reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday, underscore his administration’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for the country’s youth and enhancing their contributions to national development.

According to Tinubu, while the NYSC has remained a strong symbol of national unity for more than five decades, evolving national realities demand a more dynamic and skills-driven programme.

Under the new reforms, the NYSC orientation course will be extended from three to six weeks, with a revamped curriculum focused on civic responsibility, leadership, patriotism, career readiness, entrepreneurship, digital and financial literacy, as well as specialised training tailored to corps members’ academic qualifications and career aspirations.

The President said participants will receive sector-specific training in agriculture, healthcare, education, technology, law, public service, infrastructure, the green economy, enterprise development, the creative industry, and para-military and security services.

He expressed confidence that the reforms would produce a new generation of skilled, innovative and patriotic young Nigerians capable of driving the country’s economic growth and national transformation.
