Tinubu Calls for Helicopters as Germany Pledges Security Support in Sahel

President Bola Tinubu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have vowed to deepen bilateral relations and expand collaboration across the security, power, and railway sectors.

The commitment was made during a brief telephone conversation on Wednesday, during which both leaders also highlighted cooperation in the creative arts and skills development.

On power, President Tinubu flagged Nigeria’s need for support in power transmission under the Presidential Power Initiative.

Chancellor Merz assured that Siemens is ready to assist, while Deutsche Bank stands by to finance the project.

The leaders also discussed security concerns in the Sahel region. President Tinubu called for the provision of used helicopters for intelligence reconnaissance, stressing that,
“The Sahel corridor is bad and needs our support. Intelligence support reconnaissance is needed.”

Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Germany have spanned 65 years. Chancellor Merz welcomed the imminent arrival of Nigeria’s new ambassador to Germany and underscored the importance of the arts, calling for the establishment of the Great Museum of African Arts.
