President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security coordination and intelligence-driven response framework.
In a statement made available to The News Chronicle, the appointment was conveyed in a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, CON, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni.
According to the statement, the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to deepening inter-agency collaboration, improving intelligence integration, and enhancing proactive responses to emerging security threats across the country.
Major General Famadewa (Rtd), a highly decorated officer, brings over three decades of experience in military operations, intelligence coordination, counter-terrorism strategy, and international security diplomacy.
During his tenure as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) between 2015 and 2021, he played a central role in reshaping Nigeria’s intelligence architecture. He was instrumental in establishing the Intelligence Fusion Centre, a multi-agency platform that brought together the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces for coordinated threat assessment and operational synergy.
Since retiring from active service, he has served as Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, where he contributed to policy research on policing, civil-security relations, and national security reforms. He is also the author of the monograph “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” which proposes frameworks for improved security collaboration.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that the appointment will further strengthen the administration’s homeland security strategy, particularly in intelligence coordination and risk management, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He urged the new Special Adviser to deploy his experience and expertise in advancing national security priorities and supporting ongoing reforms in the sector.
