Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, a lawyer, and financial intelligence expert has been appointed by President Bola Tinubu to serve as the Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale on Tuesday.
Hafsat Bakari has years of experience in anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing, and counter-proliferation financing (AML/CFT/CPF).
Before her appointment, Bakari served as Deputy Director at the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit and held various positions at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including Head of the General Services Unit, Head of the Strategy and Reorientation Unit, and Head of the Board Secretariat.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Bakari will effectively discharge her duties, particularly in addressing illicit financial flows and other sharp practices in the nation’s foreign exchange markets.
Her appointment is pending confirmation by the Senate.
