TikTok Removes Universal Music Group Songs Amid Royalty Dispute

—

TikTok is pulling songs from Universal Music Group (UMG) due to a failed royalty deal with ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company.
Originally targeting UMG-owned or distributed songs, the removal now extends to compositions controlled by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG).
This entails the removal of songs written or co-written by UMPG-signed songwriters, leading to muted videos featuring these tracks.
This sweeping change impacts 20-30% of popular TikTok songs, affecting artists well beyond the UMG roster.
The dispute has escalated with UMG accusing TikTok of attempting to strong-arm them into an unjust deal, while TikTok criticizes UMG for prioritizing greed over artists’ interests.
UMG acknowledged the impact on artistes and songwriters but emphasizes a commitment to negotiating a fair compensation agreement.
Despite the disagreement, it’s noteworthy that TikTok constitutes only about 1% of UMG’s total revenue.
While these changes may not directly impact UMG’s revenue stream, they pose challenges for artistes and songwriters who lose a vital platform for music promotion and potential royalties.
