TikTok Lite Investigation Closed by European Commission

—

The European Commission has ended its investigation into TikTok Lite’s “task and reward” feature after TikTok agreed to remove it from the EU permanently.

This feature allowed users in France and Spain to earn points for in-app activities, which could be exchanged for Amazon vouchers.
TikTok has promised not to reintroduce the feature or anything similar under a different name.
The EU started the probe because it worried that the feature could negatively affect young users’ mental health by encouraging addictive behavior.
After the investigation began, TikTok had already paused the feature in the EU.
The European Commission is happy with the quick resolution, which ensures the protection of EU citizens, including minors.
The Commission will continue to monitor TikTok’s compliance using its Digital Services Act (DSA) powers and will work with authorities in Member States.
If TikTok does not follow its commitments, it could face penalties, including fines up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
Meanwhile, a separate investigation into TikTok’s main app, focusing on its algorithm and age-assurance measures, is still ongoing.
