Tight Security at National Assembly as Natasha Plans Return After Court Ruling

There was a heavy security presence at the National Assembly on Tuesday as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan prepared to return to her seat after being suspended by the Nigerian Senate.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier ruled that her suspension was unconstitutional and did not follow Senate rules. The court described the six-month suspension as illegal.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended over alleged misconduct based on recommendations from the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
Following the court’s judgment, she announced she would resume her duties on Tuesday, July 8, as directed by the court.
However, the Senate leadership insisted she must first apologize before being allowed to return to her duties, despite the court order.
As she prepared to return, security operatives were stationed at various points around the National Assembly, especially at the entrance to the Three Arms Zone. They were seen thoroughly checking vehicles and individuals entering the complex.
