Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds to Hit Nigeria Tuesday as NiMet Issues Rain Alert

Nigerians should brace for thunderstorms, moderate rains, and gusty winds across the country on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, forecasts widespread wet weather from morning till night.

NiMet said northern states will start the day sunny with patches of clouds, while Borno, Taraba, and Adamawa will experience thunderstorms with light rains in the morning.

By afternoon and evening, moderate thunderstorms with rain are expected to spread across Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Katsina, and Kano, with warm and humid conditions prevailing during the day.

In central states, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected in the morning, with light rains and thunderstorms possible over Niger State and the FCT.

Most parts of the North Central region will see moderate thunderstorms and rains from the afternoon into the evening, accompanied by lightning and occasional gusty winds.

Southern states will be cloudy from morning with thunderstorms and light rains over Lagos, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. Widespread thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across most of the region later in the day, and NiMet warned that this could cause slippery roads, localized flooding, reduced visibility, and strong winds in some areas.

The agency advised Nigerians to secure loose objects as strong winds may precede thunderstorms, while motorists should drive cautiously due to heavy rain and poor visibility. Residents in flood-prone areas were urged to remain alert for possible localized flooding, and the public was told to avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms.

Airlines were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe operations, as humidity remains high nationwide.
