Three Arraigned in Ekiti Over Alleged Breach of Peace, Cannabis Possession

Three men, identified as Yahusa Jubril, Ajayi Emmanuel and Ajayi Olumide, were on Thursday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged breach of peace and unlawful possession of suspected cannabis.

The defendants, whose residential addresses were not disclosed, pleaded not guilty to the two count charge.

The prosecutor, Inspector Ayodeji Aina, told the court that the alleged offences were committed on July 7 at about 10:00 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti.

According to him, the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace. He further alleged that they were found in possession of a wrap of weed suspected to be cannabis.

Aina said the offences contravene Sections 181(1)(d) and 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The prosecutor requested an adjournment to enable the prosecution to study the case file and assemble its witnesses.

Counsel to the defendants, Mrs Blessing Falaye, urged the court to admit her clients to bail, assuring the court that they would not abscond.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr Olatomiwa Daramola, granted each defendant bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned until July 24 for hearing.
