VeryDarkMan is the public alias of Martins Vincent Otse. He is widely known for his outspoken social-media commentary and self-described “online police” persona.
Several biographical sources give April 8, 1994, although some older Nigerian blogs have incorrectly reported 1996. Because of the conflicting records, the 1994 date is best presented as the commonly cited date rather than an unquestionable fact.
Reports identify Otse with Agenebode in Edo State, even though sources disagree over his exact birthplace, with Kaduna and Lagos also appearing in biographies.
Before becoming famous for online activism, he was reportedly involved in fitness modelling and entertainment. Some biographies also describe minor acting appearances, although these career details are less well documented than his later social-media career.
His confrontational videos targeting celebrities, businesses and alleged fraudulent practices helped turn him into a major social-media personality.
Rather than simply describing himself as an activist, VDM has repeatedly adopted the persona of “CSP VeryDarkMan” and “Nigeria’s number one online police,” presenting himself as someone who investigates and calls out wrongdoing online.
His activities have included community-oriented interventions, including borehole projects and sanitation campaigns. A 2026 academic paper reported that his Martins Vincent Otse Initiative had raised more than N377 million as of January 2026.
His supporters are known as the Ratel Movement, named after the honey badger, an animal popularly associated with fearlessness. He has also described the movement as the “4th Arm of Government.”
His confrontational online style has resulted in complaints, arrests and legal battles. In May 2025, he was detained by the EFCC following an incident involving a Guaranty Trust Bank branch in Abuja and was released after five days.
A 2026 academic publication described him as having more than 2.8 million Instagram followers and 4 million Facebook followers as of January 2026.
Nigerian music star Davido publicly followed and endorsed VeryDarkMan in 2023, a moment frequently cited as an important boost to his online profile.
One of the issues that helped establish his reputation was his criticism of products and businesses he believed were misleading consumers, including skincare products.
