Then What?

—

The Federal Government says NNPC is cutting fuel prices for 30 days to ease the transport burden. They call it “price modulation” and “landing-cost ceilings,” insisting it’s not a subsidy return. Strip away the semantics, and one question remains. Then what?

NNPC slashes pump prices for a month. Then what? Do bus drivers magically drop fares, or do tickets stay high because tires, engine oil, and road levies are still climbing with inflation? When a driver spends 7 hours in a queue to save a few Naira, who pays for the lost daily trips?

Millions of Nigerians rely entirely on independent filling stations in suburban and rural areas. If NNPC stations are the only ones offering discounts, do rural commuters watch city centers get cheap fuel while their own food transport and survival costs stay untouched? Then what?

Day 31 eventually arrives. Then what? Does crude oil drop overnight? Does the Naira magically stabilize? Or do citizens wake up to a violent price shock as NNPC resets to full market rates? A scheduled price hike guarantees panic buying and dry pumps on Day 29.

Independent marketers can’t absorb losses like a state enterprise. If private stations close or refuse to sell at a loss, 100% of national demand falls on a few state outlets. We trade slightly cheaper petrol for multi-kilometer gridlocks and thriving jerrycan cartels.

The government says refiners will “carry shortfalls and recover them later.” How do they recover them? A deferred loss is just the old fuel subsidy wearing a temporary mask. If NNPC foregoes revenue today, where does the money for state allocations and infrastructure come from tomorrow?

Governance cannot be run on a 30-day trial subscription.

Macroeconomics is not a free trial that auto-renews at a higher rate when the timer runs out. Until the government can explain what happens on Day 31, Day 60, and Day 365, every press release is just a delay of the inevitable.
