The Team Needs to Score, Not You -Henry Slams Ronaldo After Portugal Draw

Thierry Henry delivered a sharp tactical breakdown of Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance, accusing the captain of prioritizing personal goals over team success after Portugal was held to a stunning 1-1 draw by DR Congo.

Portugal’s World Cup campaign hit an unexpected speed bump in Houston as a resilient DR Congo side fought back to claim a historic 1-1 draw in Group K.

Seleção das Quinas looked set for a routine opening day when 21-year-old João Neves opened the scoring early, finding the back of the net in just the 6th minute to give Portugal a 1-1 lead. However, the European heavyweights failed to capitalize on their early dominance.

DR Congo grew in confidence as the match progressed, and their persistence paid off just before the break. In first-half stoppage time (45+2′), Yoane Wissa stunned the Portuguese defense with a brilliant equalizer, securing what would eventually stand as a historic World Cup goal and point for the Leopards.

The post-match fallout, however, has been completely dominated by standard-setting criticism from former France international Thierry Henry. Speaking on Fox Sports’ post-match analysis show, Henry did not hold back when dissecting a crucial second-half sequence where Ronaldo got in the way of a dangerous chance.

Using the touchscreen to break down the play, Henry pointed out how Ronaldo’s movement in the final third actively sabotaged a clear-cut goalscoring opportunity because of his ‘obsession’ with getting on the scoresheet.

“One thing that’s important, people, please at home: the team needs to score, not you need to score,” Henry emphasized during the broadcast.

Analyzing the tape, Henry explained how a selfless run from the veteran captain would have dragged Congolese defenders deep into the six-yard box, opening up space for a routine finish behind him. Instead, Ronaldo crossed directly into the path of the ball.

“Because he wants to score, he goes into the path of Bruno Fernandes,” Henry noted. “If he goes into that six-yard box, the defender would have had to follow him, and then it would have been a tap-in for Bruno Fernandes. But because he wants to score, he goes into the path of the back pass. You see both players, and it’s easier for the defense to defend. And that’s my thing: the team needs to score, not you.”

The viral clip sparked intense debate across social media, highlighting a growing tactical dilemma for Portugal. Even the opposition took note of the fading aura of the iconic number seven. When asked if they had a specific tactical plan to contain the Real Madrid legend, DR Congo midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau candidly admitted they weren’t overly concerned.

“To be honest, no, not really,” Mukau said. “We know that Ronaldo isn’t the same as before. He’s a bit older now… Still, he’s one of the greatest, much respect to him. But he is older now.”

Despite the heavy scrutiny and tactical breakdown from pundits, Portugal manager Roberto Martínez fiercely defended his decision to leave his captain on the pitch for the full 90 minutes while chasing a winner.

“It made no sense at all to take Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the best goalscorer in history, off the field when we were looking for goals,” Martínez told reporters in his post-match press conference.

Portugal will have to quickly push the noise aside as they shift focus to their remaining Group K fixtures. Portugal will look to pick up their first win of the tournament when they face Uzbekistan on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, before wrapping up the group stage in a highly anticipated showdown against Colombia on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
