The Dangerous Chemical Farmers Spray in your Beans

—

Beans are popular legumes many Nigerians consume due to their taste, fiber attributes, and protein content. However, it is essential to know that often at times, these legumes are sprayed with dangerous chemicals by farmers. An example of this chemical is a popular pesticide called Sniper, which contains the active ingredient Dichlorvos (DDVP), a toxic organophosphate compound that can be harmful if ingested in large quantities or over an extended period.

Although efforts have been made by the Ministry of Agriculture to curb the use and application of dangerous chemicals to store beans, an untold number of farmers still use these chemicals to prevent infestation.

However, in order to ensure the safety and health of your family it is important to take these steps when preparing your beans.

  1. Inspect Beans thoroughly before purchasing them at the store. Look out for signs of discoloration, heavy chemicals, or any abnormality.
  2. Ensure you properly rinse the beans thoroughly with water before cooking as this will remove any surface contaminants or residues. Rub them gently with your hands during the rinsing process to ensure that the water reaches all parts of the beans or you could soak the beans overnight, discard the water after soaking and then rinse the beans again before cooking.
  3. Cook the beans thoroughly as this can help break down and eliminate any residual chemicals present.
  4. Ultimately, other than seeking cheap options, purchase your beans from reliable and trusted sources.

Beans are very nutritious food options that offer several health benefits. They are rich in vitamin A, folate, manganese, and fiber. These nutrients support various aspects of well-being, such as maintaining healthy blood pressure, promoting digestion, and supporting skin health. Adding black-eyed peas to your diet can be a simple and delicious way to enhance your overall health.
