Terrorists Flee as Troops Rescue 7 Abductees, Defuse IED in Zamfara

Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have recorded fresh operational successes in Zamfara State, foiling separate terrorist abduction attempts, rescuing civilians and neutralising an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted along a major road.

In one of the operations on August 17, 2026, troops of Sector 2 responded to an abduction incident along the Gurusu–Anka Road and immediately pursued the terrorists.

The pressure forced the attackers to abandon their captives and flee, enabling the troops to rescue seven victims; four women and three children, unharmed.

In a separate operation in Tsafe Local Government Area, troops swiftly responded to reports of terrorists attempting to abduct motorists around Magazu Village.

The troops engaged the attackers, forcing them to abandon their victims and escape into the surrounding bushes. Some of the rescued civilians sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and were promptly evacuated to a medical facility for treatment.

Earlier that day, troops of Sector 2 also responded to the discovery of a terrorist-planted IED along the Gurusu–Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.

The area was immediately secured, while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team successfully neutralised the device, averting a potentially deadly attack on troops and unsuspecting road users.

The Theatre Command said the operations underscored the vigilance, swift response and determination of Operation FANSAN YAMMA troops to protect lives, secure communities and keep major routes safe from terrorist threats.

It reassured residents that troops would sustain pressure on terrorist elements across the Joint Operations Area and deny them the freedom to threaten innocent citizens.

The command also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide security forces with timely and credible information on suspicious activities.
