The campaigns of Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are at odds over the rules for their upcoming debate, particularly whether microphones should be muted when a candidate is not speaking.
The high-profile event which is scheduled for September 10, 2024, in Philadelphia, comes just weeks after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race following a disastrous debate performance, leaving Harris as the Democratic nominee.
The dispute centers on whether microphones should remain live throughout the debate or be muted when a candidate is not speaking, a condition both Biden and Trump accepted during their June debate hosted by CNN. Harris’s campaign is advocating for live microphones, with spokesman Brian Fallon stating, “Trump’s handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own.”
In response, Trump’s senior adviser Jason Miller accused the Harris campaign of trying to alter the agreed-upon rules, claiming they sought “a seated debate, with notes, and opening statements.” The Harris campaign has, however, denied these allegations.
Trump further fueled uncertainty by suggesting he might not participate in the debate. On Sunday night, he posted on his Truth Social network, questioning why he should debate Harris on ABC, the hosting network, which he criticized as biased. During a campaign stop in the Washington area, Trump said, “Doesn’t matter to me, I’d rather have it probably on,” when asked about the microphone rules.
The September 10 debate is the only one both campaigns have officially committed to. With just over two months until Election Day on November 5, the outcome of this debate could be crucial, especially as Harris gains ground in key swing states like Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
The stakes are high, and both candidates are aware that their performance could significantly influence the dynamics of the 2024 presidential race.
On November 5, 2024, U.S. citizens will vote to elect the next president.
