Tension Escalates in Bakassi as Militants Kill Three Cameroonian Officers, Seize Gunboats

Tension is mounting across the Gulf of Guinea after a reported deadly attack on Cameroonian security forces in the Bakassi Peninsula.
Local sources indicate that suspected separatist militants, believed to be aligned with pro-Biafra movements, crossed into the Isangele subdivision on Wednesday and launched a coordinated assault on a patrol unit of the Cameroon Gendarmerie at about 11 a.m.
Preliminary reports suggest that at least three security operatives were killed during the confrontation.
The attackers allegedly overpowered the patrol team and seized two gunboats stationed along the coastal waterways, heightening fears over maritime security in the already fragile region.
Although Cameroonian authorities have yet to issue an official statement, security reinforcements have reportedly been deployed, with intensified patrols across surrounding creeks and border channels. Residents in affected communities have been advised to remain indoors as efforts continue to restore calm.
The Bakassi Peninsula, historically plagued by territorial disputes and cross-border tensions, has increasingly witnessed a surge in criminal and militant activities, including piracy, smuggling, and armed insurgency.
Security analysts warn that the latest attack could mark a dangerous escalation, particularly if armed groups begin targeting key coastal infrastructure and assets in the Gulf of Guinea.
