Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule in 1960, with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa becoming the first Nigerian head of government. He served as the Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 to 1966. Nnamdi Azikiwe assumed office on October 1, 1963, when Nigeria became a republic.Â
