Nigerian singer Tems has shared her thoughts on how her style and self-expression have evolved over time, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself.
In a recent interview with Karefa Johnson from Essence Magazine, Tems explained that her unique fashion sense is simply a reflection of being authentic, rather than an attempt to convey a specific message.
“You should be yourself even if something else is expected of you,” Tems stated. “You win automatically when you are true to yourself, no matter what that looks like. That’s why there’s variety.”
Tems also spoke about the pressure to conform to certain styles, especially for artists and women. She stressed that because everyone is different, there shouldn’t be a standard way of dressing.
“We’re all different and not meant to be the same,” she said. “I know there’s a standard, but there shouldn’t be one. There shouldn’t be a standard for how artists or women should dress. We’re all unique, and there shouldn’t be a requirement or expectation that you have to dress a certain way.”
Karefa Johnson asked Tems if she realizes how much she inspires others in terms of self-love, acceptance, and authentic self-expression.
In response, Tems expressed gratitude for being seen as a role model in these areas and reaffirmed her commitment to authenticity.
“I appreciate that people see me this way,” she said. “I believe everyone should be themselves. I can’t be anyone else—it just won’t work. Trying to be someone else is a disservice to yourself. Once you start trying, you’ve already missed the point. That’s something I live by.”
In the end, Tems encourages everyone to embrace their individuality, believing that true success comes from being authentic and true to who you are.
