Telcos Advocate for Cost-Reflective Pricing Model Amid Denials of Tariff Hike

Telecommunications companies have refuted claims of seeking a tariff hike, instead, advocating for a shift towards a cost-reflective pricing model.
The call for this shift stems from a desire for autonomy to adjust prices in accordance with operational costs, as emphasized by the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo.
He underscored that the objective is sustainability rather than short-term gains.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has affirmed that the current pricing model is indeed based on cost.
A joint statement by ALTON and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) outlined four critical areas of concern: infrastructure deficits, protection of assets, cost-reflective tariffs, and regulatory independence.
Telcos argued that a pricing model aligned with economic realities is essential to sustain the growth of the industry.
This stance has garnered support from various stakeholders and industry analysts.
Associations such as the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMs) have also voiced their backing for cost-reflective tariffs.
As discussions continue, the telecommunications sector said it remains focused on finding solutions that balance the need for sustainable operations with consumer affordability.
