The Swiss Government has generously donated €1.2 million to assist the victims of the recent flood in Borno State, Nigeria.
This humanitarian gesture was announced by the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Nicolas Lang, during a visit to the Government House in Maiduguri on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Nicolas Martin-Achard, Senior Humanitarian Advisor, and Mr. Florent Geel, Senior Political Advisor.
The devastating flood has left thousands of people displaced and caused significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and farmland in Borno State.
Switzerland’s financial contribution is aimed at providing relief and support to the communities most affected by the disaster.
During his visit, Ambassador Lang expressed deep sympathy for the victims of the flood, reaffirming Switzerland’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in times of crisis.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State welcomed the Swiss delegation and expressed profound gratitude for their continued support.
He highlighted the strong partnership between Switzerland and Borno State, noting that this donation was not the first time the Swiss Government had extended a helping hand.
In 2023, Switzerland contributed $700,000 to the Borno Model, a program designed to rehabilitate armed Boko Haram insurgents and assist civilians who had been caught in the crossfire of the conflict in the region.
Governor Zulum assured the Swiss Government that the €1.2 million donation would be used efficiently to bring much-needed aid to the flood victims.
He emphasized that these funds would go a long way toward providing shelter, food, medical care, and other essential services for those who have been displaced by the disaster.
Switzerland’s donation is part of a larger international effort to address the severe impact of the flood. In addition to Switzerland’s contribution, the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation has pledged N1 billion to support relief efforts in Borno State.
These combined efforts are aimed at alleviating the suffering of the flood victims and helping the affected communities recover and rebuild.
The flood in Borno State has drawn attention from governments, international organizations, and humanitarian groups, all working together to deliver aid to those in need.
The solidarity shown by Switzerland and other organizations reflects a global commitment to standing with Nigeria during this difficult time.
Governor Zulum, in his closing remarks, commended the Swiss Government for their unwavering support and the swift response to the crisis.
He urged other international partners and well-meaning individuals to follow Switzerland’s example in providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Borno.
This donation serves as a reminder of the importance of global cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by natural disasters.
