Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 African Women’s Cup of Nations after a commanding 6 to 2 victory over Egypt, setting up a crucial showdown with Cameroon.
The defending champions had finished second in Group C after losing to Malawi while Cameroon emerged group winners after beating Mali and Ghana.
The News Chronicle reports that the tie is crucial for Nigeria because they will qualify directly for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, if they win on Saturday.
Africa could have six teams at the tournament if the other two teams which lose in the quarter-finals finish as the best-placed losers in the intercontinental playoff.
Nigeria scored two beautiful goals in their emphatic win over Egypt. Asisat Oshoala sent them on their way with a stunning penalty before Gift Monday made it two within minutes of half-time. Egypt pulled one back, but the Falcons were too strong in the second half.
Uchenna Kanu restored Nigeria’s two goal lead before Christy Ucheibe and captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted further penalties. Joy Omewa then completed the rout with her first WAFCON goal deep into stoppage time.
The Falcons must now overcome Cameroon to move into the semifinals and keep their record extending title defence alive.
