The Super Eagles suffered a damaging 3-0 defeat to Guinea Bissau on Tuesday, leaving Nigeria with a major fight on their hands in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Nigeria entered the Group L clash hoping to build on their 2-1 victory over Madagascar, but the Wild Dogs produced a dominant performance in Bissau to move top of the group with six points.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the 15th minute after capitalising on a pass from Renato Nhaga, leaving Nigeria with plenty of work to do after the break.
The Super Eagles failed to find a response and were punished again in the 66th minute when Mama Baldé doubled Guinea Bissau’s advantage.
Nigeria’s miserable night was completed in added time when Tamble Monteiro scored the third goal, exposing further weaknesses in the Nigerian defence.
The News Chronicle reports that Nigeria now sit on three points, while Guinea Bissau have taken control of the group. Tanzania and Madagascar have one point each after their 1-1 draw.
With Tanzania already guaranteed a place as co host, Nigeria must now finish above Guinea Bissau to secure the group’s remaining qualification spot.
The Super Eagles will face Russia in an international friendly on October 6 before their next AFCON qualifier against Guinea Bissau on November 9.
