Nigeria’s Super Eagles wrapped up their group stage campaign in style on Monday with a convincing 3 to 1 victory over Uganda, preserving a flawless record at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Already assured of top spot in Group C after earlier wins against Tanzania and Tunisia, Nigeria showed depth and intensity despite eight changes to the starting lineup. Goals from Raphael Onyedika, who struck twice, and Paul Onuachu ensured maximum points for the Eagles, while Uganda’s hopes of sneaking into the round of 16 suffered a decisive blow.
Paul Onuachu opened the scoring in the 28th minute after turning in a delivery from Dele Bashiru. Uganda stayed compact before the break but their resistance weakened in the second half following the injury enforced substitution of captain and goalkeeper Dennis Onyango. Matters worsened when his replacement, Salim Jamal Magoola, was sent off for handling outside the box.
Nigeria’s dominance intensified after the dismissal, with Onyedika capitalising to score twice in quick succession and put the result beyond doubt. Uganda managed a late consolation through Mato, who finished calmly past Francis Uzoho.
The Super Eagles ended the group with nine points and will remain in Fes for their round of 16 clash against the third placed team from Group F. The knockout phase begins on January 3, with the final scheduled for January 18 in Rabat.
