The Joint Admission And Matriculation Board, JAMB, has come under criticism from the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).

The National Publicity Secretary, Abdullahi Yelwa, has asked the admission body to desist from what he described as the extortion of money from unsuspecting applicants and causing unnecessary hardship on Nigerians.

While presenting a paper as a guest speaker during the Bauchi State Stakeholders Interactive Session organized by the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Shehu Buba Umar, at the weekend, Yelwa revealed that JAMB is supposed to be a service-oriented government agency instead of a revenue-generating agency causing Nigerians untold hardship.

Yelwa called on JAMB to jettison the idea of subjecting applicants to paying extra fees for a change of course or institution in the event they could not secure admission from their preferred first choice. He argued that there is no need for second and third choices if an applicant cannot get admission with the first choice.

He also maintained that, regardless of an applicant’s score, they should be able to use the same result in the next session if they cannot get admission in the current session. The National Publicity Secretary stated that JAMB should stop deceiving Nigerians with policies that tend to be milking money from them. He appealed to Senator Shehu Umar to use his position to address some of these JAMB policies that have subjected Nigerians to untold hardship.

On his part, the organizer of the meeting, Senator Shehu Umar, said that the interactive session was organized to interface with stakeholders in the area and chart a way forward for the improvement of the deteriorating state of education, from primary to higher institutions.

The program, tagged ‘Attaining a brighter future for Bauchi South Senatorial District through the 10th Assembly: A legislative Agenda for the Senator,’ drew stakeholders from across the Bauchi South District to fashion a path to progress, prosperity, and transformation of the district.
