Concerns about poor maintenance and staff negligence in Akwa Ibom State-owned hospitals have raised questions about Governor Umo Eno’s administration.
Otobong Effiong Bob, a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly representing Nsit Ubium Constituency, expressed disappointment over the unsatisfactory conditions in public hospitals.
During the September 11, 2024, plenary session, Bob highlighted that the current state of healthcare facilities and the negligence of health workers were damaging the image of the state government.
His remarks followed a report by Effiong Johnson, the Chief Whip representing Mbo Constituency, who shared his experience during a visit to the General Hospital at Awa Iman in Onna Local Government Area.
Johnson observed that by 10 a.m., the medical superintendent was not at his post, despite the significant investments the state had made in equipping the hospital.
He emphasized that while the governor cannot personally oversee every task, failure by public servants to fulfill their responsibilities reflects poorly on the administration.
The Assembly agreed that the State Commissioner for Health, along with other relevant officials, should appear before the House on September 17, 2024, to address these concerns.
