Stakeholders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council have thrown their weight behind Garba Muhammad’s candidacy for the position of NUJ President.
The endorsement comes ahead of the forthcoming National Delegates’ Conference, which is set to take place in Owerri, Imo State.
At a consultative meeting held in Kaduna on Wednesday, the Chairman of the NUJ Kaduna State Council, Hajiya Asma’u Yawo Halilu, expressed full support for Garba Muhammad’s presidential bid.
She emphasized that the Kaduna State Council considers Garba’s candidacy as a collective mission and vowed to rally the necessary backing to ensure his victory.
“This is our project, and we will do everything possible to deliver it, in shaa Allah,” she declared, underscoring the determination of the Kaduna Council to play a pivotal role in securing the NUJ presidency for Garba Muhammad.
Garba Muhammad, a seasoned journalist and member of the Correspondents’ Chapel in Kaduna State, organized the consultative meeting to engage with key stakeholders and formally announce his intention to run for the presidency of the NUJ.
During his address, Garba outlined his vision for the future of the NUJ, driven by a strong desire to build on the foundation laid by previous leaders of the union and to further elevate its status.
Garba expressed deep concern for the welfare of journalists across Nigeria, pledging to prioritize initiatives aimed at improving their working conditions and overall well-being. He also promised that, if elected, his tenure would usher in extensive opportunities for both international and local training programs for journalists from all regions of the country.
In addition, Garba emphasized his commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in journalism.
He stressed that, under his leadership, the NUJ would actively encourage its members to adhere to these principles.
Among the key areas of focus for his administration, Garba highlighted the importance of profitable utilization of the NUJ National Secretariat land, streamlining the registration process for members, and ensuring productive engagement with retired NUJ members to benefit from their wealth of experience.
Veteran journalist and former Chairman of the Kaduna NUJ Council, Mal Yunusa Aliyu, also spoke at the meeting, voicing his strong support for Garba Muhammad’s candidacy.
Aliyu noted that Garba’s competence and capabilities made him the ideal candidate for the position, surpassing any considerations of regional or political bias.
He expressed confidence that Garba Muhammad is well-equipped to lead the NUJ to greater achievements.
The consultative meeting was well-attended, drawing participation from past chairmen of the Kaduna NUJ, former national officers residing in Kaduna, chapel chairmen and secretaries, as well as officials from the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
These stakeholders, along with other influential members of the NUJ in Kaduna, pledged to work collectively to ensure the success of Garba Muhammad’s bid for the NUJ presidency.
