SSANU and NASU set to commence strike on Monday due to withheld salaries

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have said they will stop working across many universities in Nigeria.

They want the government to pay them the money they did not get when they stopped working for eight months in 2022.

During the time they were not working, the government of the former President Muhammadu Buhari did not give them their salaries.

In October 2023, the current President, Bola Tinubu, said the government would give four months of the salaries they missed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

But SSANU and NASU are not happy about this. They say it’s not fair that only ASUU got paid, while they did not.

They sent a letter to Femi Gbajabiamila, who works for the President, and Tahir Mamman, the Education Minister, but they didn’t get a reply.

So, they warned the government that they might stop working again. They gave the government seven days to do something about it, but the government didn’t. So, last week, SSANU and NASU started a warning strike for seven days.

In a letter they sent out, Mohammed Ibrahim, who is the SSANU leader, and Peters Adeyemi, who is the NASU leader, said they are doing this because the government did not listen to them.

They told all the branches of their unions in different universities to follow this strike and not to work.

They said everyone should follow this strike completely and not do any work during this time. They also said that everyone must follow this rule, and no one should try to avoid it.
