The feature appears inside Spotify’s Now Playing screen. While listening to a supported song, users can scroll below the lyrics section to find a set of swipeable cards. These cards display short explanations about the song’s inspiration, behind-the-scenes details, cultural impact or artist commentary. Users move between cards by swiping left or right.
One example highlighted in early testing is “Master of Puppets” by Metallica (1986).
The About the Song cards explain that the track focuses on addiction and loss of control, using the idea of a “master” pulling strings to represent substances that dominate a person’s life. Another card notes how the song experienced a renewed surge in popularity after being featured in the Netflix series “Stranger Things” in 2022.
Spotify said the goal is to add context to music listening and help fans better understand the creative process behind songs. In a statement published on its blog, the company wrote:
“Music fans know the feeling: A song stops you in your tracks, and you immediately want to know more. What inspired it, and what’s the meaning behind it?”
As of February 2026, About the Song is available only as a beta feature for Spotify Premium users on iOS and Android.
The rollout currently covers:
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Canada
- Ireland
- New Zealand
- Australia
The feature is not yet available in Nigeria or other African countries. Spotify has not announced a specific date for expansion to additional regions but indicated that availability will increase over time.
Spotify sources the content from third-party music and culture websites. The information is then summarized using artificial intelligence and presented in short, readable cards. Not every song includes deep historical detail. For tracks with limited background information, Spotify may instead show facts about the album, artwork or an AI-generated explanation of the song’s lyrics.
The launch of About the Song follows several other recent Spotify updates, including:
- AI-generated playlists based on user prompts
- Group messaging features
- Page Match, which links physical books to audiobooks
- Plans to expand into selling physical books
Spotify has previously experimented with similar ideas, including its partnership with Genius for Behind the Lyrics and a limited Storyline feature but both were eventually discontinued.
The new feature adds an educational layer to music streaming. It allows listeners to understand lyrics more clearly, discover the stories behind well-known songs, and connect cultural moments to the music they hear. But for now, Nigerian users will need to wait for the feature to reach the region as Spotify continues its phased global rollout.
