Spotify Announces Price Increase for Premium Subscription in Nigeria

—

Spotify has announced a 40% increase in its Premium subscription price in Nigeria, effective from November 2024.

The monthly fee will rise from ₦900 to ₦1,300.

According to the company, the price hike is aimed at supporting further innovations in product offerings and features.

Subscribers were notified about the change and given the option to cancel their subscriptions if they do not agree with the new pricing.

In addition to the price increase, Spotify introduced a new feature called “Offline Backup.”

This feature, available to Premium users, allows access to music offline without the need to download, provided certain criteria are met.

Meanwhile, this comes as other tech companies have also raised prices in Nigeria.

Netflix increased its Premium plan from ₦5,000 to ₦7,000 in July 2024, while Starlink doubled its standard residential subscription from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000, citing inflation.

Roaming customers on Starlink also saw their fees surge from ₦49,000 to ₦167,000 per month.

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s telecom sector criticized the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for allowing these increases, accusing it of double standards for rejecting similar requests from local telecom operators.
