In a statement shared by the minister’s office, the Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, revealed his dissatisfaction and called on the Nigeria Football Federation to provide a comprehensive technical report to explain their poor run of form despite the support they have received from the President and the Ministry.
The call is traced to the Super Eagles’ consecutive poor performances during the Africa World Cup qualifiers matchday 3 and 4 games against South Africa in Uyo, where they were held to a 1-1 draw after coming from behind, and the disappointing defeat against Benin Republic in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire.
In what is described as below par, Nigeria managed only one point from two games and are winless after four matches, sitting just one point above the bottom team in Group C, Zimbabwe, who still have a game in hand. Nigeria will be relegated to the bottom of the group should Zimbabwe win their game tomorrow.
The statement from the Minister demands a response to the disgrace the team has caused Nigerians:
“The recent results are unacceptable. Despite the immense support from President Tinubu and the high expectations of Nigerian football fans, the Super Eagles have underperformed.
“The NFF must provide a comprehensive technical report explaining the reasons behind this poor showing and justify why there should not be consequences for the disappointment caused to both the Government and the generality of Nigerians.”
Mr. Enoh said Nigerians are passionate about the team and deserve an explicit explanation for this poor run of form:
“Our supporters are passionate and devoted. They deserve an explanation for why our national team has not been performing to the expected standards since the last AFCON.”
