Spain’s World Cup Joy Turns to Grief as Fountain Collapse Kills Teen, Injures Several Fans

A 13-year-old boy has died, and several other people were injured after a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s FIFA World Cup victory in the western Spanish city of Ciudad Rodrigo.

The tragedy occurred shortly after Spain secured its first World Cup title since 2010, as jubilant fans gathered in public squares and streets to celebrate the historic triumph.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Monday, the Ciudad Rodrigo City Council expressed its condolences to the family of the victim.

“The City Hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and extends its condolences over the death of a 13-year-old boy,” the statement read.

The council described the incident as a heartbreaking turn of events, noting that what was meant to be a joyous celebration had ended in tragedy.

Emergency services said they received multiple distress calls shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time reporting that a fountain had collapsed on a crowd of people gathered around it.

In a post on X, the emergency agency confirmed that another teenager sustained injuries in the incident, while several others were also hurt.

According to local media reports, the fountain gave way after numerous fans climbed onto the structure during the celebrations.

Spain’s World Cup victory sparked nationwide celebrations, with thousands of supporters filling city squares, streets, and public landmarks, waving flags, singing, and cheering the national team’s success.

Similar scenes were witnessed across several Spanish cities as fans marked the country’s return to the summit of world football.

Authorities have, however, repeatedly urged supporters to celebrate responsibly, warning against climbing monuments and other public infrastructure, as large spontaneous gatherings have occasionally resulted in accidents and injuries.
