South Africa Signals Readiness to Host WAFCON 2026 After CAF Shifts Tournament Dates

South Africa has indicated it is ready to step in and host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations if Morocco eventually withdraws from staging the competition.

The position was announced by the country’s Sports, Arts and Culture Minister, Gayton McKenzie, shortly after the Confederation of African Football announced a change to the tournament calendar.

CAF confirmed that the 2026 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will now take place from July 25 to August 16, 2026, in Morocco. The competition was originally scheduled from March 17 to April 3.

Speaking during a media briefing, McKenzie said South Africa has the facilities, transport networks, and experience required to organise a tournament of that scale.

He also expressed concern about the uncertainty surrounding Morocco’s readiness, suggesting that limited public promotion and visible preparations had raised questions in some quarters.

Although Morocco remains officially the host, rumours of possible logistical issues have sparked debate within African football circles about contingency plans. South Africa’s offer seems designed to guarantee the event goes off without a hitch should conditions change.

CAF said that the new dates came from discussions with other stakeholders and FIFA. After considering several operational aspects, the body stated that the change was required to ensure the success of the continental tournament.

Expected to feature leading teams, including Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations remains the top women’s football competition on the continent. Furthermore, the competition helps advance women’s football across Africa.
