Snapchat Introduces Watermarks for AI-Generated Images

Snap Inc. has announced plans to implement watermarks on AI-generated images within its platform.
These watermarks will feature a translucent version of the Snap logo accompanied by a sparkle emoji.
The decision aims to address concerns surrounding the authenticity and ownership of AI-generated content.
Users exporting images from the app or saving them to their camera roll will see the watermark automatically applied.
The move comes as part of Snap’s broader efforts to enhance transparency and safety surrounding AI technologies.
It follows similar initiatives by other tech giants, including Microsoft, Meta, and Google, who have also implemented measures to label or identify AI-generated content.
Snap currently offers its paying subscribers the ability to create and modify AI-generated images using Snap AI, including through features like Dreams, which focus on selfie enhancements.
To further ensure transparency, the company has established safety protocols and visual markers for AI-powered features such as Lenses and context cards for AI-generated images.
In February, Snap collaborated with HackerOne to launch a bug bounty program aimed at testing the effectiveness and security of its AI image-generation tools.
The initiative underscores Snap’s commitment to minimizing potential biases in AI results and enhancing safety and moderation mechanisms, particularly in light of past controversies, such as the issues surrounding its “My AI” chatbot in March 2023.
