Six women have been arrested in Gadaka, Yobe State, after a Hisbah operation uncovered suspected commercial sex work in the community.
The women were picked up in the Abuja area of Gadaka, Fika Local Government Area, during a recent operation by operatives of the Yobe State Hisbah Commission.
The operation, according to the commission, also targeted bars suspected of selling and processing alcoholic drinks as part of a wider enforcement exercise aimed at curbing activities considered contrary to the state’s religious and moral values.
The Head of Administration of the Hisbah Commission in Fika LGA, Malam Musa Abari Talba, disclosed the arrests while speaking to journalists.
Talba said the operation went beyond enforcement, with Hisbah officials also engaging residents in sensitisation campaigns on what the commission described as activities capable of undermining the moral fabric of the community.
He said the officials preached to residents and urged them to shun acts considered harmful to the community while encouraging them to abide by the law.
According to Talba, the operation was part of the commission’s broader mandate to promote peace, discipline and good moral conduct among residents of Yobe State.
He said the commission would continue its enforcement and sensitisation activities as part of efforts to maintain order and promote what it described as acceptable moral standards across the state.
