With Showmax’s debut, the Peacock streaming platform will be available in over 70 countries and will be continuously improved by thousands of engineers pooling their collective knowledge. Millions of fans have seen major events including Super Bowl LVI, the Olympics, WrestleMania 39, and the FIFA World Cup final from Qatar in 2022 thanks to the top-notch platform.
Two NFL games that Peacock successfully streamed earlier this year garnered 5.7 million concurrent devices for the first game on December 23 and made history on January 13 when the second game became the first-ever NFL Wild Card playoff game to be available only on streaming. Comcast was the recipient of a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award in 2023 for its Peacock, Sky, and Xfinity sports viewing offerings.
“Peacock’s best-in-class technology platform will deliver a world-class streaming experience to Showmax audiences,” stated Patrick Miceli, executive vice president and chief technology officer of NBCUniversal’s direct-to-consumer and international division.
“We are excited to bring the Peacock platform’s dependability and live streaming capabilities to the new Showmax, as it was built from the ground up to accommodate both live and on-demand content, including the biggest live sporting events.”
In addition to the Premier League, the new Showmax offers access to an exciting entertainment universe with a diverse cast of stars and storylines from several genres. More than 1 300 hours of Showmax Originals will be produced in the upcoming year, marking a notable 150% increase in production output over the previous year, with no fewer than 21 new Showmax Originals debuting in February alone, five of which are Nigerian Originals.
This impressive slate of African programming is complemented with a worldwide offering that will make viewers happy. The world’s most popular movies from Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky, as well as Universal Pictures, Focus Features, NBC, Peacock, DreamWorks Animation, and Telemundo, will always be available for Showmax to stream thanks to MultiChoice’s collaboration with these two media conglomerates. The impressive lineup of content features movies such as the most recent installment of the popular Fast franchise, Fast X, and Wes Anderson’s comedy-drama Asteroid City; procedural drama series like NBC’s The Irrational, which stars Jesse L. Martin; and the Peacock original comedy series Killing It, which stars Craig Robinson and is created by the same creative team as Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Additionally, Showmax will continue to pull from networks such as HBO, which has new seasons of House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, True Detective, and The White Lotus on the way, and Paramount, which will release Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning and Halo S2 in February.
“Showmax’s content offering is further boosted by its focus on the African market and strengthened by the vast creative and commercial presence already established by MultiChoice,” stated John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice’s West Africa division.Nobody comprehends Africa as well as we do. With a potent streaming service that will transform streaming in Africa by 2024, Showmax is prioritizing the continent.
With the content and platform providing strong foundations for the new Showmax, ease of access for customers is another essential business aim. Showmax, the first streaming service in Africa to introduce a mobile-only plan and enable offline viewing through mobile downloads, has now introduced extremely affordable new pricing points, along with an expanding array of payment choices for users.
Another joint venture partner of MultiChoice, Moment, facilitates this payment environment. Moment is creating the largest pan-African payments network by collaborating with more than 200 payment partners, including banks, mobile money providers, shops, and payment schemes. Additionally, subscribers of DStv will still be able to add Showmax to their monthly subscription and receive substantial savings. Soon, Showmax will reveal further collaborations that will provide clients with even more benefits.
Starting on January 23, 2024, the redesigned Showmax app will be accessible in app stores in 44 markets as part of a phased conversion process. The process will commence next week and be finished in February of this year. Beginning this week, existing Showmax users will receive communications with instructions on how to use the new app. By February 12, 2024, the new Showmax will be available in all markets.
